The Astrolium profections calculator returns your current profected house, sign, and time-lord — the planet ruling the 12 months between this birthday and your next — in under 300 ms in your browser. The technique was recorded by Vettius Valens in the 2nd century and survived 20 centuries because it works. We made it instant.
This is the free preview. The full predictive timing feature stacks profections against transits and Zodiacal Releasing on one scrubbable ribbon. For the deeper reading method, see the profections guide. For the related techniques, see the zodiacal releasing calculator and the Saturn return calculator. For the $29 per month Pro plan, see pricing.
What the calculator returns
The output is structured as three blocks:
-
The profected house and sign. The chart wheel shows your 12 houses with the active one highlighted. The sign holding the house, the year of life you're inside, and the date of your next birthday all sit on the same card.
-
The time-lord of the year. The planet ruling the activated sign — Mars rules Aries and Scorpio, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and so on across the 7 classical planets that hold the 12 signs. Astrolium surfaces this planet prominently because wherever it sits natally and whatever transits hit it become your story this year.
-
The theme of the year. Each house has a traditional theme — 1st is body and identity, 2nd is money and resources, 7th is partnership and open enemies, 10th is career and public role. Astrolium shows the theme in one line and gives you a paragraph of narrative for the activated house.
How profections work
Annual profection is elegant: each year of life corresponds to a sign and a house, advancing one position each birthday. For the full doctrinal background, read the profections guide.
| Age | Active house |
|---|---|
| 0, 12, 24, 36, 48… | 1st house (body, vitality) |
| 1, 13, 25, 37, 49… | 2nd house (money, resources) |
| 2, 14, 26, 38, 50… | 3rd house (siblings, communication) |
| 3, 15, 27, 39, 51… | 4th house (home, roots) |
| 4, 16, 28, 40, 52… | 5th house (children, pleasure) |
| 5, 17, 29, 41, 53… | 6th house (work, service, health) |
| 6, 18, 30, 42, 54… | 7th house (partnership) |
| 7, 19, 31, 43, 55… | 8th house (shared resources, mortality) |
| 8, 20, 32, 44, 56… | 9th house (travel, belief) |
| 9, 21, 33, 45, 57… | 10th house (career, public role) |
| 10, 22, 34, 46, 58… | 11th house (friends, alliances) |
| 11, 23, 35, 47, 59… | 12th house (the hidden, retreat) |
Your 1st house year is the year you turn 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60 — every multiple of 12 from birth. Each year after rotates through the houses in order. The planet ruling the current sign — the time-lord — becomes the protagonist of your year. Where the time-lord sits natally, and which transits hit it, are what an astrologer reads when a client asks "what's this year going to be like?"
It's the most-used technique we know. We made it instant. Pair it with the zodiacal releasing calculator to see the era-level structure the profected year sits inside.
What "time-lord" actually means
Time-lord is the Hellenistic term for the planet ruling a span of time. In annual profection, the time-lord is the planet ruling the sign that holds the activated house. If your 7th-house year activates Libra, your time-lord is Venus. If it activates Aries, your time-lord is Mars.
The time-lord doesn't replace the rest of the chart. It elevates one planet's transits and natal placement to protagonist status for 12 months. A Saturn return falling in a Saturn-ruled year reads as the loudest possible signal. A Saturn return falling in a Venus year still happens, but the framing changes.
After the calculator
Profections give you the protagonist. Transits give you the plot. When you know your year is ruled by Venus, every transit to natal Venus becomes a chapter — Saturn squaring it, Jupiter trining it, Mars approaching it. The full reading is the time-lord plus the year's transits plus the current Zodiacal Releasing period.
For the structured way to read all of it together, see the predictive timing feature — same calculator output, but stacked against transits and ZR on one scrubbable ribbon from 1900 to 2100. For the 4,000-word interpretive guide that walks through profections alongside transits and Zodiacal Releasing, read the profections guide. For practitioners running this on a whole roster — sort by "this year's lord under hard transit" and you've got your booking list — see pricing.
