What is Solar Return Year Ahead Analysis?

The Astrolium solar return analysis tool pulls the whole year-ahead planning bundle in one call: the SR signature (rising sign, lord of the year, sect, sect light, Sun and Moon houses), every monthly profection with its interpretation text, all 25 lunations between this birthday and the next, plus every lunar return inside the year. One request, one screen, ready to paste into a client session.

This is the practitioner view. The lighter solar return chart calculator gives you the visual wheel. The annual profections calculator gives you the monthly and daily sub-periods on demand. This year-ahead tool is the bundle that working astrologers actually open before a yearly reading.

What the bundle contains

Astrolium's solar return analysis calculator bundles a full year-ahead in one pass: the SR signature (rising sign, lord of the year, sect, sect light, Sun house, Moon house), twelve monthly profections with interpretation text, twenty-five lunations (new moons and full moons across the solar year), and thirteen lunar returns inside the chosen solar year. Inputs are birth date, time, place, the target solar year, and an optional relocation city; the tool casts the SR, runs the profected sub-period chain across each calendar month, locates every lunation across the SR span, and pins the thirteen lunar return moments to the second. The output renders on a single screen so a working practitioner can read the year's spine in roughly twenty seconds and drill into any block. Math runs on Swiss Ephemeris, accurate to under 1 arc second. Free, no account required.

The output is structured as five blocks, in the order an experienced reader actually moves through them:

  1. The SR signature card. The rising sign of the solar return chart, the planet that rules it (the lord of the year), the natal house that planet sits in, the SR Sun and Moon houses, the sect (day chart or night chart), and the sect light. This is the year's spine in roughly twenty seconds of reading.

  2. Monthly profections. The twelve sub-periods of the profected year, each with start and end dates, the activated sign and house, the monthly time-lord, and a paragraph of interpretation text. Click any month to expand the full text. The cards flag the months whose monthly lord matches the annual lord because those amplify.

  3. Lunations timeline. All 25 new moons, first quarters, full moons, and last quarters between this birthday and the next, grouped by calendar month. Each row shows the date, the kind, the Sun sign, the Moon sign, and the SR houses the Sun and Moon fall in at the lunation moment. That last piece is what makes a lunation actionable inside the year: a new moon in the SR 10th is a career beat, a full moon in the SR 4th is a home beat.

  4. Lunar returns. All 13 monthly Moon-returns-to-natal-Moon events inside the year. Each row shows the date, the Moon sign, the LR Ascendant, the Moon's LR house, and the Moon's SR house. Lunar returns are the monthly emotional pulse. The SR house column tells you which annual theme each month is going to surface.

  5. Lookup state. A small card noting whether the chosen year is the currently active one, plus the previous and next SR moments. Useful when you are scoping a future year or auditing the boundary between two solar years.

How practitioners read it

The reading method is layered: SR signature first, then the profected month the client is currently inside, then the next two or three lunations that fall in the same house the profection activates. When three layers agree on one house, that is the structural beat of the next few weeks.

The Hellenistic tradition behind this stack is old. Vettius Valens recorded annual profections in the second century, and the broader "the year's lord travels through the year's transits" reading method is the original time-lord technique. Brennan's Hellenistic Astrology (2017) brought the layered view back into mainstream working practice. The lunar return layer was formalized by Mary Shea and Bernadette Brady in the 1990s, alongside relocated returns.

For the doctrinal background on profections, read the profections guide. For the broader timing landscape (when Saturn and Neptune meet, what era you are in), read the Saturn-Neptune conjunction guide.

When to run the calculator

Most practitioners pull the bundle one or two months before the client's birthday. The SR signature and the first three months of profections are the most useful pieces of the session. Some run it the morning after the return, when the moon cycle is freshest. Mid-year check-ins benefit from running the bundle scoped to the remaining months: the lunations and lunar returns ahead of the client become the actionable timing.

The free version of the calculator runs in your browser with no signup. Casting takes about three seconds. Nothing is stored, nothing is emailed. The Pro tier saves the bundle to a client profile and overlays it with daily transits in the predictive timing workspace.

After the calculator

The signature gives you the year's frame. The profected months give you the inner clock. The lunations and lunar returns give you the calendar of activation points. Pair this output with:

Frequently asked questions

How is this different from the solar return chart calculator?
The solar return chart tool gives you the wheel for the return moment, plus the standard interpretation paragraphs. This year-ahead tool gives you the practitioner planning bundle: the signature block (rising sign, lord of the year, sect, sect light, SR Sun and Moon houses), the full twelve-month profection ladder with monthly themes, all twenty-five lunations between this birthday and the next, and every lunar return inside the year. One request, one screen, ready to paste into client notes.
Why does the bundle include lunations and lunar returns?
Because that is how working astrologers actually read a year. The SR signature sets the year's spine. The profected month tells you which house theme is on this month. The lunations mark the activation points (a new moon in the SR 7th house is a partnership beat). The lunar returns mark the monthly emotional pulse. When the same house lights up across two or three of those layers in the same week, that is a date you mark in the client calendar.
What does sect mean and why is it on the signature card?
Sect is the Hellenistic distinction between day charts (Sun above the horizon at the return moment) and night charts (Sun below). It tells you which luminary is in charge: the Sun for diurnal charts, the Moon for nocturnal. The sect light's position becomes a primary diagnostic for the year. Most modern calculators drop this. Astrolium keeps it because Chris Brennan and the wider Hellenistic revival have made it standard practice again.
Do I need an exact birth time?
Yes. The solar return moment depends on the Sun's exact natal longitude, and the SR Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes. A reading without birth time gives you the Sun's house and approximate profected sign, but the rising sign and lord-of-year derived from it become unreliable. Most working astrologers refuse to cast an SR without a verified or rectified time.
When in the year should I run this?
Practitioners pull the next year's bundle one to two months before the client's birthday, then read it during the birthday session. Some run it the morning after the return for the freshest moon-cycle context. Casting it mid-year is useful when a client books a check-in: the lunations and lunar returns ahead of them are the actionable layer for the remaining months.
Can I export the result?
Yes. Copy as Markdown for Claude, ChatGPT, Obsidian, or Notion. The Markdown bundle includes the signature, the full twelve-month interpretation text, the lunation table, and the lunar return table. Practitioners on the Pro tier ($29 / month) save the bundle to the client profile and stack it against transit overlays in the workspace.
