What is Part of Fortune?

The Astrolium Part of Fortune calculator returns your Lot of Fortune (⊗) by sign, degree, and house, with the correct sect-aware formula applied automatically. Day chart, night chart: the math flips and Fortune lands where the hellenistic sources actually put it. Under 300 ms in the browser, no signup, no upload. Works across 23 house systems.

This is the free preview. The full predictive timing feature tracks transits to Fortune across decades and runs zodiacal releasing from the lot in 1 click. For the doctrinal background, read the arabic parts guide and the hellenistic astrology guide. To compute Fortune's partner lot, run the lot of spirit calculator. What the calculator returns

Astrolium's free Part of Fortune calculator returns the Lot of Fortune (⊗) by sign, degree, and whole-sign house, computed with the correct day or night formula based on your chart's sect. Inputs are birth date, time, and place; the tool first determines sect by whether the Sun sits above or below the horizon at birth, then applies the day formula (Ascendant + Moon − Sun) or the night formula (Ascendant + Sun − Moon) and reduces the result to the 0–360 range. The output names the Lot's sign, degree, and whole-sign house, plus the lord of Fortune with its natal sign, house, and condition, and every natal planet making a sign-based aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition) to the lot with exact orb. Math runs on Swiss Ephemeris, accurate to under 1 arc second; render time is under 30 seconds. Practitioners read Fortune as the body-and-fate lot paired with Spirit, the action-and-mind lot. Free, no account required.

The output is 3 cards:

  1. The Lot of Fortune. Sign, exact degree, and the house it occupies. The chart wheel highlights the lot with the ⊗ glyph at its exact position.
  2. The lord of Fortune. The planet ruling the sign Fortune occupies. Its natal house, sign, and aspects, because the lord matters as much as the lot itself.
  3. Aspects to Fortune. Every natal planet making a sign-based aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, opposition) to the lot, with exact orbs.

The math runs on the Swiss Ephemeris at arc-second precision, the same library Solar Fire and Astro Gold use.

Why sect matters for Fortune

The Lot of Fortune is sect-sensitive, meaning its formula reverses depending on whether the chart is diurnal or nocturnal.

  • Diurnal chart (Sun above the horizon at birth): Fortune = Ascendant + Moon − Sun
  • Nocturnal chart (Sun below the horizon at birth): Fortune = Ascendant + Sun − Moon

The two formulas land Fortune in different places, sometimes 180 degrees apart. Half of all charts are nocturnal. Running the day formula on every chart, which most online calculators do, puts Fortune in the wrong sign for 50% of users.

This was not an obscure detail in the source tradition. Vettius Valens uses the sect-reversal explicitly in his worked examples in the Anthology. Paulus Alexandrinus codifies it. Schmidt and the Project Hindsight translators surfaced it in the 1990s; Brennan walks through it in chapter 18 of Hellenistic Astrology. Skipping it is a known error pattern.

Astrolium auto-computes whether your chart is diurnal or nocturnal and applies the correct formula. The output shows which formula was used, so you can verify.

How to read Fortune

The Part of Fortune indicates the body, sustenance, and contingent material life: what happens to the native regardless of conscious choice. It is the chart's primary indicator for general fortune and physical circumstance. For the full Hellenistic framework this reading sits inside, see the hellenistic astrology guide.

  1. Identify Fortune's sign and degree. The sign colors the lot's expression. Fortune in Cancer reads differently from Fortune in Capricorn. Astrolium shows sign and exact degree.
  2. Identify Fortune's house. Use whole-sign houses for traditional work. Fortune in the 10th emphasises public role and material recognition. Fortune in the 4th emphasises home, family, and inherited resources.
  3. Locate the lord of Fortune. The planet ruling the sign Fortune occupies is the lord. Where the lord sits natally and what aspects it makes are nearly as important as the lot's own placement.
  4. Note aspects to Fortune. Conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, and oppositions from natal planets activate the lot. Apply sign-based aspect rules.
  5. Track transits and progressions to Fortune. Hard transits from Saturn, the outer planets, and eclipses to Fortune or its lord are key activations across life. Astrolium tracks these in the predictive timing feature.

A quick reading template. Fortune in the 2nd: material accumulation, earned resources. Fortune in the 6th: livelihood arrives through work, service, daily craft. Fortune in the 11th: material gain through friends, alliances, community. The traditional house topics scale naturally to Fortune; the lot foregrounds them.

Fortune in zodiacal releasing

The most consequential working use of the lot is as the starting point for zodiacal releasing of Fortune, the technique that releases nested time periods from the lot and produces the Fortune ribbon across the life.

The Fortune ribbon reads body events, material accumulation, sustenance, the contingent life. A peak Fortune period (when an L1 or L2 sign is angular relative to Fortune) is typically a year of body events or material consequence: pregnancy, illness, inheritance, the windfall, the loss. Astrolium runs ZR from Fortune in 1 click and stacks it against the Spirit ribbon in the predictive timing feature.

The Spirit and Fortune ribbons do not move in lockstep. A peak Fortune year during a quiet Spirit year is the unsought success: the inheritance, the medical event, the body fact. Reading both lets you separate "what happened to me" from "what I did."

After the calculator

Compute Fortune, then run its partner lot. The lot of spirit calculator gives you the action-side counterpart: career, choice, what you do. Together they form the spine of hermetic predictive work.

For the full 7-lot panel (Fortune, Spirit, Eros, Necessity, Courage, Victory, Nemesis), the predictive timing feature computes all 7 with sect-aware formulas and tracks transits to each. The $29 per month Pro tier exposes all 7 lots pre-computed for every chart on your client roster.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Part of Fortune?
The Part of Fortune (also called the Lot of Fortune, ⊗) is the most famous hermetic lot in hellenistic astrology. It indicates the body, sustenance, and the contingent material life. Formula: Ascendant + Moon − Sun for day charts, Ascendant + Sun − Moon for night charts. Astrolium computes it in under 300 ms.
Why does Fortune need a birth time?
Fortune is computed from the Ascendant, which changes about 1 degree every 4 minutes. A 30-minute error in birth time shifts Fortune by roughly 7 degrees. Without an accurate time, Fortune can land in the wrong sign and the wrong house. Astrolium requires the birth time for accuracy across 23 house systems.
Does the day-night sect really matter?
Yes. The Fortune formula reverses by sect. Day chart: Ascendant + Moon − Sun. Night chart: Ascendant + Sun − Moon. In a night chart, the day formula puts Fortune up to 180 degrees away from its correct position. Most online calculators ignore sect and silently use the day formula. Astrolium auto-detects sect.
What house should I read Fortune in?
Use whole-sign houses for hellenistic work; that is the system the lot was designed in. Each sign equals one house. Astrolium defaults to whole-sign and supports 22 other house systems including Placidus, Porphyry, Koch, and Equal. Switch with 1 click without re-entering birth data.
What does the lord of Fortune mean?
The planet ruling the sign Fortune occupies is the lord of Fortune. Its placement and aspects matter as much as Fortune's own position. A weakly placed Fortune in a strong sign with the lord well-aspected can still indicate a supported material life. Astrolium identifies the lord and links to its natal placement.
