Five elements define the foundational Human Design reading.
Your Type is the broadest category: the energy signature that determines how you're designed to interact with the world and with other people. Five Types, five distinct operating rhythms. Generators and Manifesting Generators are designed to respond; Projectors are designed to wait for recognition and invitation; Manifestors are the only Type designed to initiate; Reflectors mirror the community and sample rather than commit.
Your Strategy is the correct mode of action for your Type. It's not a philosophy but a mechanical instruction: the specific condition under which decisions and actions taken by your Type tend to go well. Generators wait for something to respond to. Projectors wait for the invitation. Manifestors inform before they act. Reflectors wait a full lunar cycle — roughly 29 days. Astrolium returns your Strategy alongside your Type so the two read together.
Your Authority is the internal signal to listen for when making decisions. It sits beneath the mind. Emotional Authority means waiting for clarity through the emotional wave before deciding. Sacral Authority means listening to the gut response in the moment. Splenic Authority means trusting the immediate spontaneous impulse. Your Signature Theme is the felt sense of alignment — the emotional signal that tells you a decision or trajectory is correct for your design. Your Not-Self Theme is the opposite: the emotional tone that arises when you're acting against your design. They're paired because knowing one without the other makes the guidance incomplete.
Why the birth time matters
Human Design uses two planetary snapshots: the birth moment and a point 88 degrees of solar travel before birth (roughly 88-89 days). The positions at both moments are mapped to the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching. The resulting pattern of defined and open centers determines your Type, Authority, and the specific gates active in your chart.
A 15-minute error in birth time can shift a planetary position enough to change a gate. A gate change can flip a center from defined to open. An open center where there was a defined center changes Authority. Which means the text label "Emotional Authority" or "Sacral Authority" is only as accurate as the birth time behind it.

The five Types in brief
Manifestors are the initiators. Roughly 9% of the population. Designed to act without waiting for permission, but designed to inform the people their actions will affect. The Not-Self theme is anger — the signal that something is being forced rather than initiated cleanly. The Signature is peace.
Generators are the workers. Roughly 37%. Designed to respond to life rather than initiate. The Sacral response — a gut yes or no — is the decision-making guide. The Not-Self theme is frustration. The Signature is satisfaction.
Manifesting Generators share the Sacral response of Generators but have an additional channel that allows initiatory movement after response. Roughly 33%. The Not-Self theme is frustration and anger combined. The Signature is satisfaction and peace.
Projectors are the guides. Roughly 20%. Designed to understand systems and guide others, but only when invited. Without recognition and invitation, Projector energy tends to exhaust itself against resistance. The Not-Self theme is bitterness. The Signature is success.
Reflectors are the mirrors. Roughly 1%. No defined centers at birth — the chart is entirely open. Designed to sample and reflect the health of the community. Designed to wait a full lunar cycle before major decisions. The Not-Self theme is disappointment. The Signature is surprise and delight.
